Baby boiled wool clothing from HALFEN – Comfort from day one

When a baby enters the world, parents embark on a journey filled with new decisions. One of them: What clothing is good enough for the most precious thing they have? At HALFEN, we have a clear answer to that. Since 1928, we have been producing felted wool clothing in our own knitting mill in Hungenroth – made from pure Merino wool, in the fourth family generation, with the care of a craft business that knows baby clothing is more than just fabric: It is protection, warmth, and security all at once.

What makes felted wool so special for babies

Felted wool is made from pure new wool, which is felted under heat, moisture, and movement into a dense, robust fabric. What has been practiced in traditional craftsmanship for centuries is also a small wonder of nature: The resulting fabric is naturally water-repellent, windproof, breathable, and temperature-regulating – completely without membranes or synthetic coatings.

For babies, this means: They are kept warm without overheating. They stay dry, even when snowflakes land in the park. And they wear a fabric directly against their skin that is free from harmful substances, microplastics, and chemical finishes. Our Merino wool is GOTS-certified and mulesing-free – a promise we make equally to parents, animals, and nature.

From changing table to playground – our felted wool clothing for babies

The felted wool romper with zipper is our best-selling classic: A single piece that doesn't slip, warms from neck to feet, and is available in many colors from mauve and natural to sage, smoke blue, and dolphin. Perfect for transferring from the stroller to the carrier, from the car to the park.

For those who prefer even more flexibility, opt for the tie-front felted wool romper: This zipper-free version ties at the sides and is particularly easy to put on and take off – ideal for the first few weeks when every diaper change is still a small choreography.

For cool nights on the go or at home, we recommend the felted wool sleeping bag with legs and detachable arms. Designed to grow with your baby, the sleeves can be removed in warmer weather, and the separate legs keep your baby mobile even in the buggy. The classic sleeveless felted wool sleeping bag offers a calmer option for relaxed sleep phases.

Our felted wool sack – also popular as a blanket for the car seat – is the handmade answer to cold car seats and windy walks: a warming cocoon of organic natural Merino wool that envelops your newborn like a second hug.

Wool that thinks – and grows – with you

Babies grow fast. That's why our cuts are designed so that felted wool clothing can be worn for several months. What remains beyond that can be passed on to siblings, cousins, or friends – felted wool doesn't get worse with age; it even gains character.

And the best part for parents in everyday life: Merino wool is naturally self-cleaning. It has antibacterial properties, neutralizes odors, and rarely needs to be washed. In most cases, it's enough to simply hang the felted wool romper outdoors – and it's ready for the next outing.

Care – as simple as possible

If washing is necessary: wool wash cycle at a maximum of 30 degrees with a mild wool detergent or by hand. Do not tumble dry, but lay flat to dry. Felted wool forgives a lot, but not everything – a dryer is taboo; high temperatures will cause the wool to shrink and felt.

Made in Hungenroth – a family affair since 1928

Behind each of our felted wool rompers stands a family business with almost a hundred years of history. Today, led by Fabian Halfen in the fourth generation, we produce baby clothing in Hungenroth in the Hunsrück region, stemming from the understanding that clothing for the little ones entails special responsibility. Fair, regional, plastic-free – and with the love for craftsmanship that only a true family business can bring.

Frequently Asked Questions

From what age is boiled wool clothing suitable for babies?

HALFEN boiled wool clothing is suitable from birth. Our wool footmuff is ideal for newborns in a car seat, while the wrap-style boiled wool overall is especially easy to put on and take off, making it perfect for the first weeks. The boiled wool overall with a zipper will then accompany your baby throughout the entire first and second year.

Won’t my baby get too warm in boiled wool clothing?

No. Merino wool naturally regulates body temperature – it keeps your baby warm when it’s cold and wicks excess moisture away when your baby becomes active. Unlike synthetic materials, heat does not build up, helping to prevent heat rash. Boiled wool is therefore suitable from mild autumn days to cold winter days.

Is boiled wool water-repellent enough for walks in the rain?

Boiled wool is naturally highly water-repellent thanks to its dense felt structure and the wool’s natural lanolin. Your baby will stay dry in light rain, snowfall, and drizzle. In heavy, continuous rain, we recommend using an additional rain cover for the stroller – boiled wool is not fully waterproof functional fabric, but a breathable natural material.

How do I properly care for baby boiled wool clothing?

Wash as infrequently as possible – merino wool largely cleans itself thanks to its antibacterial properties. Simply air out the overall in fresh air. For stains, clean specific spots with lukewarm water and a small amount of wool detergent. Full washing should only be done on a wool cycle at a maximum of 30°C, then lay flat to dry. Avoid using a dryer, as boiled wool may shrink.

What size should I choose for a boiled wool overall?

We recommend choosing the correct size or at most one size larger. Boiled wool stretches slightly with wear and adapts to movement. Since babies grow quickly, especially in the first year, it’s often best to choose the larger option so the overall can be worn for several months. Our cuts are generally designed to grow with your child.
