Merino wool baby clothes
Merino wool is one of the few materials that actively adapts to body temperature. It warms when it's cold, wicks moisture away when the baby sweats, and dries quickly. Unlike synthetic fibers or cotton, merino wool does not store moisture directly on the skin – the baby stays dry and at a comfortable temperature, even in the car seat, stroller, or carrier. For newborns and babies with sensitive skin, this is a crucial difference.
Why Merino Wool for Babies
Extra-fine merino yarn is so fine that the individual fibers bend under the pressure of the skin instead of scratching – this is why merino wool is considered scratch-free, while other types of wool scratch. Additionally, wool has a natural antibacterial effect: merino wool needs to be washed much less frequently than other materials, which is a real advantage in daily life with a baby. Airing it out in the fresh air is sufficient in most cases.
Our merino wool comes from certified organic animal husbandry (kbT) – certified according to OCS, RWS, and GRS standards, free from pesticides and synthetic dyes. All yarns are harmless to health and processed chlorine-free.
The Collection
The HALFEN merino wool baby clothing collection includes knitted and felted items for the first months and years of life: fine-knit overalls, dungarees, trousers with elasticated waistbands, wrap jackets, and loop scarves made from extra-fine merino wool, as well as felted sleeping bags, felted overalls, and felted jackets made from fulled merino wool. Felted items are created by matting the fibers under pressure, heat, and moisture – the result is a denser, more robust fabric that is water-repellent and particularly durable.
Many items are equipped with adjustable straps, roll-up cuffs, or raglan sleeves to extend their wear time. A piece that lasts two seasons is more sustainable than three pieces that each last one season.
Care
Merino wool is easier to care for than its reputation suggests. Airing it out in fresh air is usually sufficient for everyday use. If necessary, machine wash at 30 °C on a wool program with low spin speed, dry flat. Do not tumble dry, do not iron.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is merino wool really non-itchy for babies?
Extra-fine merino yarn has such a small fibre diameter that the individual fibres bend under the pressure of the skin instead of scratching it. Coarse wool itches because the fibres are stiff enough to irritate the skin — with extra-fine merino wool, that is not the case. For newborns and babies with sensitive skin, merino wool is therefore particularly well suited.
How often do I need to wash baby clothes made of merino wool?
Far less often than other materials. Merino wool is naturally antibacterial and odour-neutral — light soiling and odours often disappear simply by airing the garment outdoors. When washing is needed, use the wool cycle at 30 °C with a low spin speed and dry flat. Do not tumble dry.
What age is the merino wool baby clothing suitable for?
The collection includes sizes from newborn through toddler age. Many pieces feature adjustable straps, foldable cuffs or raglan sleeves so they can be worn longer than conventional cuts. If you are unsure between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger one.
Is the merino wool at HALFEN certified?
Yes. Our merino wool comes from certified organic animal husbandry (kbT) and is certified to OCS, RWS and GRS standards. The wool is free from pesticides and synthetic dyes, and all yarns are processed without chlorine and are safe for skin contact.
Can merino wool baby clothing be worn in summer too?
Yes. Merino wool regulates body temperature naturally — it keeps your baby warm when it is cold and wicks moisture away when your baby gets warm. On cooler summer days, during transitional seasons or in air-conditioned rooms, merino wool is a sensible choice all year round.
