Merino Wool Children's Clothing
Merino wool naturally regulates body temperature – it warms when it's cold and wicks moisture away when the child sweats. Unlike synthetic fibers, it doesn't trap moisture directly on the skin. For active children who spend a lot of time outdoors, in forest kindergartens, at school, or playing, this is a crucial advantage: the child stays dry and well-tempered – in heat as well as in cold.
Why Merino Wool for Children
Extra-fine merino yarn has such a small fiber diameter that the individual fibers bend under the pressure of the skin instead of scratching. Added to this is the natural antibacterial effect of wool: merino wool needs to be washed significantly less often than other materials. Airing out in fresh air is usually completely sufficient in everyday life – practical for family life with children.
Our merino wool comes from certified organic animal husbandry (kbT) – certified according to OCS, RWS, and GRS standards, free from pesticides and synthetic dyes. All yarns are harmless to health and processed chlorine-free.
The Collection
HALFEN children's clothing made from merino wool includes knitted and felted items for babies, toddlers, and older children: sweaters, half-zip sweaters, vests, dungarees, trousers, jackets, coats, hats, scarves, and loop scarves made from extra-fine merino wool, as well as felted jackets, felted vests, and felted coats made from felted merino wool. Felted items are created by felting the fibers under pressure, heat, and moisture – the result is a denser, more robust fabric that is water-repellent and particularly durable.
Many items are equipped with adjustable straps, roll-up cuffs, or raglan sleeves to extend their wear time. Classic, unisex cuts allow them to be passed on to younger siblings or other children.
Care
Merino wool is easier to care for than its reputation suggests. Airing out in fresh air is usually sufficient for everyday use. If necessary, machine wash at 30 °C on a wool program with low spin speed, dry flat. Do not tumble dry, do not iron.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is merino wool itch-free for children?
Extra-fine merino yarn has such a small fiber diameter that the individual fibers bend under the pressure of the skin instead of scratching. Coarse wool itches because the fibers are stiff enough to irritate the skin – this is not the case with extra-fine merino wool. It is therefore well suited even for children with sensitive skin.
Can children's clothing made from merino wool be worn all year round?
Yes. Merino wool naturally regulates body temperature – it keeps children warm when it’s cold and wicks moisture away when they sweat. This makes it a practical choice year-round, from cooler summer days to transitional seasons and winter.
How often does children's merino wool clothing need to be washed?
Much less frequently than other materials. Merino wool is naturally antibacterial and odor-resistant – light dirt and odors often disappear simply by airing the garment in fresh air. If needed, machine wash at 30°C on a wool cycle with a low spin speed and dry flat. Do not tumble dry.
Is the merino wool used by HALFEN certified?
Yes. Our merino wool comes from controlled organic animal husbandry and is certified according to OCS, RWS, and GRS standards. The wool is free from pesticides and synthetic dyes, and all yarns are safe for health and processed without chlorine.
What sizes are available in the children's merino wool collection?
The HALFEN children's merino wool collection includes sizes from newborns to older children. Many pieces feature adjustable straps, foldable cuffs, or raglan sleeves, allowing them to be worn longer than conventional designs. If you are between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger one.
